Jackson Cannon is Boston.com Cocktail Club’s host and bar director for Eastern Standard and The Hawthorne. The veteran craft cocktail leader opened Eastern Standard in 2005 as Bar Manager, quickly cementing the neighborhood brasserie’s reputation as one of the country’s best bars, known for its attention to properly crafted cocktails and unwavering hospitality in a high-volume environment. The iconic, expansive program offering more than 60 classic and new creations secured national attention and earned Cannon “Bartender of the Year” award from Nightclub & Bar magazine in 2011. Cannon introduced the next iteration of his vision when he opened The Hawthorne, an experience centered in his commitment to thoughtfully crafted cocktails, continued cocktail/spirits education, and curating exceptional moments for guests. The Hawthorne has received numerous local and national accolades, including a semifinalist award for James Beard Foundation’s “Outstanding Bar Program” in 2014 and 2015, and winning Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award for “Best Hotel Bar” in 2017. Cannon was a finalist for “Best Bar Mentor” at the 2013 and 2014 Spirited Awards and a 2014 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award nominee for “Mixologist/Brand Ambassador of the Year.”
Mellie Wiersma - Bartender at The Quiet Few
Bartending since 2006, Mellie Wiersma's resume reads like bar crawl that's not to be missed! After falling in love with the bar Drink, she applied and was hired for the first of two stints at that iconic craft watering spot in Fort Point, Boston. As the opening bar manager for Bronwyn in Somerville, she literally had the opportunity to help build the bar, sanding, painting etc. Moving to New York found Mellie with shifts at The Roof, Saxon + Parole, Jupiter Disco and most notably, she landed the gig running the program at the esteemed Extra Fancy in Brooklyn.
She has supported Speedrack in New York and Boston, attended camp Runamuck in Kentucky (2015) and took part in the Grand Ten Distilling Academy (2014). One of her cocktails was featured in the wonderful collection of modern toasts to historic women, "Drinking Like Ladies" by Misty Kalkofen and Kitty Amann
On her return to Boston from the Big Apple she helped open Shore Leave, worked at Chickadee in the Innovation and Design Building in South Boston and poured shots at one of Boston's most famous dives, The Tam.
She now can be found in Eastie at The Quiet Few, which she calls her favorite kind of bar and whose tagline says it all, Top Self, Low Brow...
